WESTERN MORNING NEWS ROSE BOWL - SOUTH & WEST FOURSOMES

Bigbury Golf Club was the venue of this annual DevonGolf Foursomes event for ladies in the South and West divisions, with the added challenge of competing for the Western Morning News Rose Bowl. Winning the Rose Bowl requires each club’s Lady Captain has to use her telepathic skills and choose 3 pairs from her club to compete for the Western Morning News Rose Bowl where the best two team aggregate scores count. The twist is the ladies don’t know whether they are the “choosen ones” or not. Whether their great day on the golf course will count or, worse, perhaps their not so great day will count….. Tavistock had entered 10 teams so who to choose? Torquay only had 2 teams entered so no decisions to make!

The starter for the day was Ladies’ Captain Anne Norman who sent 66 pairs of ladies from the first tee in glorious sunshine. Sadly, this did not last and the sun was interrupted with a downpour of rain for a short time. Bigbury Golf Course was in wonderful condition with the prevailing wind on the back 9 spoiling some very good cards.

With Bigbury Golf Club having 6 par 3 holes, most of the 66 pairs entered the 2s competition. But it was not as easy as predicted and only Sharon Birchall and Jane Phillipson from Torquay Golf Club and Linda Bradley and Linda Emery from Boringdon Park Golf Club scored a 2. It was rich pickings!

A big thank you must go to Lady Captain Jane Wain and all the amazing staff at Bigbury Golf Club who made me and my assistant Wendy Stanbury so very welcome. Every facility was instantly made available to us, along with some fabulous flower arrangements to brighten our day, and was much appreciated.
