DEVON GIRLS AT SW INTER-COUNTIES - FINAL REPORT

Day 3 - The Final Day
It was a tough final day for our girls. First was the match against the home county of Dorset. The weather wasn't great and neither was the score. A very strong Dorset side recorded 5 wins against our girls. Credit to Lauren McGinnis (Churston) who took her match to the 18th green. Going out again in the afternoon was a tough ask but our girls showed grit and determination against Wiltshire. The weather improved and so did our score line. DevonGolf girls recorded 2 losses, 2 halves for Ellie Tampkins (Stover) and Flossy Voaden (Exeter) and a win, after a very hard fought game, for Jess Leach (Bigbury).

All matches throughout the competition were played in good spirits, with lots of chatter amongst the girls across the counties.

The overall winners, retaining the title, were Dorset and we congratulate them on their fine play.

We did our best!

Day 2
After yesterday’s gale force winds, it was great to have a gentle breeze.  Play on day 2 started early at 7.45 am with a foursomes match, followed by 4 singles, against Cornwall.

As Cornwall was unable to make the competition last year, it was difficult to predict their position. However, all the matches were very hotly contested but, regrettably, Devon again recorded an overall loss with 3 matches lost and one halved. Once again, our rookie, Flossy Voaden starred with our one win.

Although the wind picked up a little after a very quick turn around for lunch, the afternoon stayed fine, dry and warm. The performance of the afternoon session came from the Captain, Charlotte Husband, with a great win of 6 and 4. Another win, plus a halved match to cancel our 2 losses meant the overall match against Somerset was halved. There were good performances from our girls against strong opposition.

Day 1
Day 1 of the South West Junior Girls' Inter- Counties - as with the practice round yesterday, the wind was extremely strong making conditions tricky to say the least.
The first game for Devon against Gloucester was a Foursomes match, with a rookie Flossy Voaden (Exeter) making her debut to the squad, Flossy's first drive was long and straight and on the fairway.  She and her partner Jess Leach (Bigbury) had a really good game against tough opposition, taking the match to the 16th to win 3-2.

Unfortunately the 4 following singles matches all recorded losses, despite strong starts and holding their own through the front nine. This made a disappointing score line of 4 games to 1.

Day 2 is against Cornwall and the girls are hoping to come through strongly.

Our team (R-L) - Jess Leach (Bigbury), Hannah Reynolds (Exeter), Lauren McGinnis (Churston), Sophie Page (Exeter), Ellie Tampkins (Stover),
Charlotte Husband (Captain - Exeter), Flossy Voaden (Exeter) & Carys Morris (Portmore)
