DEVON GOLF

ENGLISH SENIORS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Although not as big a year for the county as the English Seniors of 2018 when 6 of the Senior squad made the cut, there were still 4 Devon golfers contesting the final day of the 2019 edition at the Elsham and Holme Hall Golf Clubs in North Lincolnshire.

8 squad members teed it up over the two courses over the first couple of days. No one in the field could match the destructive golf of eventual champion Worplesdon’s Ian Attoe, who opened with a 6-under par 65 at Holme Hall and led by 5 at the 36-hole point before finishing with 67 to win by 8.

However, Tony Allsopp (Tiverton), Paul Vicary (Saunton), Senior Team Captain Colin Papworth (Teignmouth) and Tim Aggett (Warren) all played the last day. Both Tony and Paul had excellent early rounds but struggled in the tough conditions on the final day. Tim and Colin played together on the final day, Tim having the best of it as the wind got up.

Tim finished in Tied 39th, moving up 24 places on the last day, with Paul a shot further back T51. Tony and Colin both finished T68 of the 82 players who made the cut. 288 started the week. Commiserations to Richard Ward (Dainton Park), Andre Hogan (Teignmouth), Phil Lyons (Churston) and Richard Armitage for whom things didn’t go so well.

Attention for DevonGolf turns now to the Southern Counties Foursomes Qualifier at Weston-Super-Mare at the end of the month, for which Captain Colin has announced the following side

Paul Newcombe (East Devon) & Peter Bicknell (Torquay)

Tim Aggett (Warren) & Colin Papworth (Teignmouth)

Andre Hogan (Teignmouth) & Dave Eva (Thurlestone)

Richard Ward (Dainton Park) & Tony Allsopp (Tiverton)

Paul Vicary (Saunton) & Phil Lyons (Churston)

First week of July is County Championship day at Tiverton, 27 holes of Medal. There's still plenty of time to enter online.
