DEVONGOLF
Last week saw the 25th occasion that the Henry Truscott Cup was played for which saw the four junior team regional league winners coming to Warren GC. Boringdon Park, Portmore Golf Park, Exeter GCC and Churston GC were all prepared to challenge for the final trophy of the year with Churston winning it back in 1998, Exeter 2009, Portmore in 2013 and Boringdon yet to win this county trophy. The winner would be determined from the best 5 of 6 combined individual stableford scores on the day.
On paper Exeter G&CC had the lowest combined handicap team only receiving 11 shots across 6 players, whilst 3 of the four teams had at a mix of junior boys and girls which was great to see.
At the halfway point it was impossible to separate the four teams with all the low handicappers from each of the teams putting in solid scores but a special mention to Lexi Dart (handicap 1) who returned a back nine of 5 under gross to post a score of 36 points.
Exeter and Portmore began to separate themselves from the field with Exeter holding the slenderest of leads. This was until the fifth junior team member from Portmore, Max Symonds playing off 20 carded an impressive 43 points. This put Portmore ahead by 3 points with one player to finish and this proved enough to crown Portmore Golf Park juniors’ winners of the Henry Truscott Cup 2018.
Paul Cloke congratulated all four teams for their sporting conduct and play in the final and reminded each team that they were all winners as a result of making it to the finals day by winning their respective regional leagues.
Thank you to the team at Warren GC who presented the course to a great standard, and the hospitality from all staff and members of the golf club.
