PRESIDENT’S TROPHY SEMI FINALS – PORTMORE GOLF CLUB –  7th SEPTEMBER 2018

There was definitely an autumnal nip in the air at Portmore for the President’s Trophy semi finals, a mixture of blue skies and clouds with a fair breeze. There was a very friendly atmosphere on the first tee among all the players, caddies and supporters - but also the usual competitive determination so we were set for some fine golf. Chris Longden, our County Captain, sent all the ladies off with her usual cheerful encouragement.

The first match out was Okehampton versus Woodbury Park. Game 1 was a great show of skill and determination going all the way to the 20thhole, with Abby Turner from Okehampton taking the win from Woodbury’s Ellen Norton. Game 2 also went to Okehampton, followed by wins in games 3 and 4 for Woodbury. All to play for but the Okehampton ladies took all the wins in the remaining games to secure victory for their team.

The second match was between Ilfracombe and last year’s finalists East Devon 1. Games 1 and 4 went to East Devon but Ilfracombe proved the stronger side in games 2, 3, 5 and 6 to take the match, with game 7 called in. So Okehampton will meet Ilfracombe in the President’s Trophy Final at Tiverton on 28thSeptember.

Once all the ladies were in the clubhouse enjoying some delicious match meals Chris and I rounded off the day with all the usual thanks, followed by the presentation of semi-finalist trophies to Lady Captain Ann Spiller on behalf of Woodbury Park and Team Captain Elaine Bright on behalf of East Devon 1. Congratulations to both teams, it is a wonderful achievement to reach the top 4 of a competition that had 27 entries.

My grateful thanks to Portmore Golf Club for hosting us –  to Amanda, Colin and Josh Webber and the staff for all their help on the day, we were made very welcome and offered every assistance. Special thanks to Amanda for the beautiful flower display for the trophy table and to Portmore member Sue who was on hand all day to help out.

Thanks also to Terry and Trevor, our Rules Officials for the day and, as always, to Chris Longden for her excellent Starter duties and also helping out as a Rules Official.
