DEVON GOLF

AND THE STILL CUP FINALISTS ARE.........

The top four teams from this year’s Still Cup met at Honiton, ready to play some top class golf to secure a coveted place in the final. We were blessed with perfect golfing conditions and it was wonderful to see a good number of supporters there to encourage their teams – with eight County first and second team players out on the course, those watching were in for a treat. County Captain Chris Longden was on the first tee to see the ladies off in style.

The first match out was Exeter versus East Devon. The first game was a very closely fought battle, with Exeter eventually taking the win on the 21st hole. However the East Devon ladies proved the stronger in games 2-6, securing the match win, with the final game called in.

The second match was between Saunton and the current Still Cup holders Torquay. This was always going to be a tough match for Saunton as the first three out for Torquay are all County first team players.  Torquay wrapped the match up with solid wins in games 1,2,3 and 5 to take the match, with the other games all called in.

East Devon will now play Torquay in the Still Cup Final at Tiverton on 28thSeptember, this is a repeat of last year’s final so sure to be fiercely competitive. We rounded off the day with some short speeches and the presentation of semi-finalist trophies to Lady Captain Lyne Beevers on behalf of Exeter and Lady Captain Sue Grinstead on behalf of Saunton – congratulations to their ladies for reaching this stage of the competition.

My thanks to Honiton Golf Club for hosting us –  Lady Captain Liz for all her help on the day, to the ladies who helped with ball spotting and with the lovely flowers for the trophy table, to the green staff, the Pro Shop staff and to the bar and catering staff who looked after us so well.  The course was in great condition, looking very green and lush.  My thanks also to Chris and to Lesley and David who were the Rules Officials.
