DEVONGOLF
Devon got off to a fantastic start in the morning Foursomes winning the first 3 games very comfortably through Aggett/Papworth, Allsopp/Ward and Eva/Hill. The last two pairings struggled but Lyons and Haskell, from 2 down with 3 to play, secured a vital ½ point on the last hole, giving Devon a 2 point lead going into the afternoon's Singles.
A thrilling afternoon of matchplay golf followed, with only Tiverton's Tony Allsopp and Exeter’s Colin Papworth in total control of their individual matches for Devon. These two early wins, plus tight victories in matches 1 and 3, meant Richard Ward went down the last 1 up and guaranteed Devon the win (he also won his match). What wasn’t expected was what came next.
Seven games were settled on the 18th featuring great fight backs from some Devon players. RND's Kevin Hill beat Richard Wood 2 up having being brought back to all square from an early 3 up lead, both had been down during their games. Warren’s Barrie Keith and Tim Aggett both birdied the par 5 last to win 1 up, whilst Thurlestone’s Dave Eva also birdied 18 to gain a hard fought half with Bob Broad. Tiverton’s Simon Waddington fought back from 2 down after 12 to win at 18. Devon players won 5 ½ points from the 7 matches settled at the last.
The Captain was very proud of his team’s performance, all of whom were aware of the importance of this match. Now it’s all to play for in the final tie at East Devon against our neighbours and sporting rivals Cornwall on 27th September. A win and large game points tally should retain the League title. Glamorgan and Gloucestershire may have other ideas as they also have only lost one match. The League outcome is in Devon's hands through the advantage of a better game points difference.
