Devon Seniors beat Wiltshire in Channel League

Fresh from their success in the Team Foursomes SW qualifier at Exeter but also keen to get back into winning ways in the Channel League, Devon's Senior team were hosted by Wiltshire on what is probably their 'home' course Cumberwell Park near Bradford upon Avon the venue for the recent South West Week for the County First teams.

The morning foursomes couldn't have been closer with each team winning 2 and a half points each. The Tiverton pair of Waddington and Allsopp securing the best win of 3/1.

All to play for in the afternoon Singles with Wiltshire fielding a strong and experienced team, the Captain juggled with his playing order trying to anticipate where Wiltshire may play their strengths.

Four down at the turn, Tony Allsopp's game against the legendary campaigner Roger Searle looked all but over, the captains 2017 team player of the year had other ideas and clawed his way back to one up going up the 18th and provided a gutsy par out of a fairway bunker to equal his opponents par and gain the crucial point.

Convincing wins from Mark Evans and Colin Papworth added to the Devon points, but the drama was to come after Devon had secured the five points to guarantee a halved match needing only a result from either of the last games left on the course to win the tie.

Barrie Keith from the Warren golf club was dormie two down with two to go produced some magic to finish with two birdie threes having hit his approach shot into the last to four feet. His opponents two putt forced Barrie to hole his which he duly did much to the delight of his teammates who had followed him up eighteenth.

Devon have three matches left in the Channel League two home, one away and have two points out of Three.
