FINAL DAY - ENGLISH SENIOR MEN'S OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Tim Aggett (Warren) on his hunt for Senior Order of Merit Points

FINAL DAY 8th June 2018

81 players made the cut out of 288 starting the tournament, a record six of the 13 Devon players who started were in that Final Day and those six were also the only representatives from the South West left in the event, such is the strength of Devon Seniors' Golf.

The final day was at Sherwood Forest Golf Club which had proved the tougher of the two Mansfield courses used, the other being the stunning Coxmoor Golf Club.

East Devon's Paul Newcombe, in his debut year as a Senior, just made the cut but moved halfway up the field with a spirited 75 to finish 43rd. Also in a tie on the same score was Richard Ward from Dainton Park following his good form from the Shankland Trophy in May. Again on the same score was Philip Slater from Saunton.

Paul Vicary, also from Saunton, started the event with a great 3 under score of 70 at Coxmoor and began Day 2 in a tie for second place, found Sherwood Forest a slightly different prospect and ended the event 39th but was runner up in the 65+ category.

Exeter's Colin Papworth with rounds of 73, 75 and 77 also finished in 39th position and was 10 over for the 3 rounds.

The Devon stage was set for Warren's Tim Aggett who is eager to accumulate as many English Order of Merit points as possible, found the back 9 at Sherwood troublesome. Tim then eagled 16 to get back some shots only to bogey the last to slip from 11th place to 16th. Bit it was still an excellent result for the Devon player with a three round total of 221, 72,74,75, 6 over par for the tournament.

The winner was Ian Attoe from Worplesdon Golf Club with a two under score of 213 winning in a play off on the first extra hole.

There is no doubt that the quality, prestige and stature of this National Title event is growing every year. The highest handicap within the starting 288 was 4.2 and getting lower each year.

Well done to the Devon golfers - you are a credit to DevonGolf and the South West.
