We are indebted to Malcolm Jordain, Devon Golf Captains, for the provision of the information below:

3rd April and 7th April 2017

Rodney with his wife Shirley overlooking Saunton Sands

"It is with regret and sadness I have to report to you that earlier today Rodney Beer passed away. Rodney had not been very well for about two years and today passed peacefully away.

Rodney had, over the years, fulfilled many roles in Devon golf, Secretary, Captain and President plus other positions. Rodney was Captain of his beloved Saunton Golf Club in 1985, Captain of Devon Captains in 1999 and President of Devon County Golf Union in 2001-2.

As Peter Dunstan commented today “ the end of an era”.

When his Rugby days came to an end he took up golf and threw all his energy and enthusiasm into the game getting down to a 2 handicap. Always a keen competitor, he won a good many competitions as can be seen from the frequency his name appears on our honours boards. With his wife and past ladies' captain, Shirley, he also enjoyed great success in many mixed competitions at Saunton and further afield.

He was immensely proud to become Captain of his beloved Saunton in 1985 and achieved a great deal during his year at the helm. Soon after, he channelled a good deal of his energy into the association of Devon Golf Captains becoming their Captain in 1999 and their President in 2015.

Rodney was a superb organiser and when he retired from his teaching at Ilfracombe College, he was offered the position of Secretary at Ilfracombe Golf Club and served them well during a very successful time in their history. He served on the Devon Golf Union Executive for many years culminating in him becoming President in 2001-02, only the second Saunton Member to hold this position at the time.

Rodney was always good company and an excellent raconteur as many 100s of our Saunton members, past and present, will testify. He was well known and popular throughout the County and further afield - a truly great ambassador for Saunton Golf Club and he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with Shirley and family to whom we send our condolences.

RODNEY BEER

RIP
