DEVON GOLF

JOHN SPENCER

It is with deep sadness that I have to report the passing of our long time golfing colleague and friend, John Spencer (Exeter).

I am most grateful to Hilary Greenaway for advising of his passing on Tuesday 27 September. He died unexpectedly at his care home but as many of you know, he had been suffering of late from Alzheimer’s Disease.  Funeral Details will be forwarded to you as soon as to hand.

John had been associated with Devon Golf for at least the past 50 years, on the way having won the Gold Medal at Teignmouth in 1963. He served on the County Executive Committee for many years as he did with his home club, Exeter. He was made County President in 2003 and 2004 and watched Devon win the coveted English Men's Team Championship at Formby.  The team was then captained by Mark Evans. In 2004, Devon again qualified to play at Worksop in the final this time under the Captaincy of Will Reed.

John also brought Devon into the realms of top-class Seniors Amateur golf when Devon played in the first English Seniors Team Championship in 2006 at Lincoln GC - he was the Team Captain. Seniors Golf in Devon went from strength to strength over the next 10 years qualifying no less than 6 times to play in this Championship.  We owe a lot to him for his efforts in this area of county golf.

We last saw John in October 2011 at the County's Centenary Dinner and since then his health had deteriorated until now when we learn of his sad demise.

My thanks to you all. We shall miss this gentleman very much.

RIP
