DEVONGOLF
Devon Seniors lose unbeaten run
Seniors Channel League
Glamorgan v Devon Thursday 21st June
Neath Golf Club
A warm and hospitable welcome awaited Devon Seniors by Neath Golf Club just north of Swansea above the River Neath. The Glamorgan team introducing new County Scratch players to their side were always going to provide tough opponents for Devon who haven't lost a Channel League fixture since 2016.
This James Braid course which must have been a delightful challenge for Mr Braid when he constructed Neath high in the hills above the town demanded total respect with tee shots and approaches to the greens proving tricky without local knowledge.
At lunch after the morning foursomes Devon were 2-3 down although some of the games could have swung more in Devons favour but for some lengthy putts holed on the last green by the home team.
With six points needed from the afternoon Singles, Captain Rick Pillow changed the playing order to hopefully gain the result through the middle order, unfortunately for Devon Glamorgan had other ideas and inspired golf by the home team gradually wore down their opponents some of who were up in games for most of the round. Spirited come backs winning on the last green by some of their players gradually closed the match out with Glamorgan winning by 10 1/2 points to 4 1/2.
Notable performances for Devon were by Barrie Keith who won both his games and has four points out of four available so far this season. Mark Haskell persevered in his singles at number 10 to win on the last.
Although the result hurt, it is a reality check for the squad who now look forward to their next match away to Wiltshire on the 4th July at Cumberwell Park.
