DEVON GOLF

Devon Men v Juniors 3rd March

Devon Men's Golf had their first outing of the year at Tavistock GC against a spirited Juniors Team. In cold and windy conditions, the golf played by both sides was of an excellent standard.

FOURSOMES. David Blick (East Devon) & Ryan Pope (Exeter) eased past Matt Wells (Saunton) and Jacob Tinsley (East Devon) 3/2 whilst Sam Edwards (Bigbury)and James Smith (Yelverton) played solid golf to beat Ben Isaac (Libbaton) & Alexis Lopez (Dainton Park.  In the third game Jimmy Mullen (RND) and Ryan Acres (Holsworthy) ran out 4/3 winners over Blair McHarg (RND) and Jamie Johnson (Thurlestone). It was then the Juniors started to fight back. Harry Mayers (Churston) and 15 year old Jack Pope (Exeter) halved with Sam Dunn (Teignmouth) and Harry Flower (Woodbury Park) and in the final game, Robbie Thompson (Torquay) and Matt Curnoe (Churston) gained another valuable half against Sandy & James Urquhart (both Fingle Glen).

SINGLES. So with the Men leading 4/1 at lunch, it was all to do for the Juniors in the Singles.  It would prove to be a tough task as Blick & Mullen won their respective games with ease. But Jacob Tinsley for the Juniors defeated Ryan Pope 3/2.  The Men then showed their strength in depth with the next 3 games goinf their way being victories for Sam Edwards, James Smith and Ryan Acres. Harry Mayers (1 up) and Robbie Thompson ( 4/3) kept their unbeaten records for the juniors.  We must make a comment on young Will Stenhouse (Tavistock) who stepped in at late notice for the Men's Team to replace for an unwell Sandy Urquhart.  He and Jack Pope had a great tussle and both players can take credit ffrom their halved game.  In the final game, James Urquhart defeated Matt Curnoe 2/1 to bring the overall score to a 10½:4½ win for the Men.

Under 18 Team Manager Grahame Moore and County Captain Adam Bridgewater were both delighted with the players' performances on a much drier, fast-running Tavistock course. They are both looking forward with relish to the upcoming County golfing season.  Grateful thanks to the staff and members at Tavistock GC.

Adam Bridgewater, County Captain.
