Having been postponed once by the weather, the rearranged date at Yelverton Golf Club for the County Card Mixed Betterball Stableford didn't look too likely to run either. 88 golfers were booked in to enjoy a bacon bap and coffee, 18 holes at ths magnificient course, followed by steak & ale pie, peas and chips - all for £65 a pair. What's not to like (apart from the threatening weather?). With the first prize of £150 vouchers for the winning team and prizes down to 6th place, it was all to play for.
Devon's golfers are hardy souls and all but 3 of the 44 teams turned up, if not eager but at least ready to do battle - against the course and the elements. DevonGolf volunteer referee Peter Holt kindly acted as starter and sent them on their way. Luckily, until the last 30 minutes of play, the rain held off and there was only the gusting wind with which to battle.....
In spite of the tricky conditions the early scores were very acceptable. First out were Craig Hodge and Paul West (Elfordleigh) who returned 38 points. They held the lead for an hour when Fraser Bishop and Garry Gahan (Great Torrington) posted 43 points. Scores in the high 30s continued to come in for the next hour until Alan Coles and Francis Gillen (Stover) also posted 43 points. And that was enough to secure a win for Alan and Francis on countback from Fraser and Garry.
DevonGolf are very grateful to Lance and Molly in the office, the wonderful bar and catering staff - and the greens staff who also had to battle the elements around our competition.
