DEVONGOLF
The President’s Trophy Quarter Finals were held at Honiton Golf Club on Thursday 11th August in very hot, dry conditions which added to the challenge the women faced on the day.
The first match out was Dainton Park v East Devon 1. This was a closely fought contest with East Devon 1 eventually taking the win 4-3. The second match saw the two Tavistock teams having to play each other, not an ideal situation, but despite their friendships the ladies put on a very competitive display – game 2 went as far as the 19th hole before Tavistock 1 won that game and the team then went on to take the overall win. Match 3 was between Teignmouth and Ilfracombe just as the heat of the day really started to intensify. Ilfracombe proved to be the stronger side and took the win. Last out were the teams from Okehampton and Saunton, another exciting match with a lot of ladies in the clubhouse waiting for the final result which went Okehampton’s way.
Congratulations to the winners, who will meet at the Semi-Finals of the President’s Trophy taking place at Holsworthy Golf Club on Friday, 9th September, Okehampton playing Ilfracombe at 10.24 and East Devon 1 playing Tavistock 1 at 11.36.
My grateful thanks to our host club Honiton – to Adrian Cave for his help with organisation and on the day, to the greens staff for the well presented course and to Emma and her team for the wonderful food all players enjoyed.
My huge thanks to Lady Captain Sarah and her team who welcomed the players, ball spotted, set up a water station on the course and drove round on a buggy providing extra water where needed. This extra care and attention really helped make things easier on such a hot day. My thanks go to Honiton's Vice President Penny Blackburn who did a sterling job as the starter and made sure every team got past the 4th tee crossover with the 1st hole without incident. My thanks also to the DevonGolf referees Lorna Brown and David Smith.
Congratulations to all the women who took part and played some great, competitive golf in a very friendly atmosphere. It was particularly tough out on the course in such hot conditions but they battled on without complaint and showed some real grit and determination.
