DEVONGOLF
August saw the women taking part in the County Foursomes and competing for the Western Morning News Cup for those clubs in the North and East of the county and the Western Morning News Rose Bowl for clubs in the South and West.
Although this competition is an individual foursomes competition, the players have the added incentive that they may be picked (unknown to them when they tee off on the 1st hole) as part of the team that comprises 3 individual pairs where the best 2 aggregate scores count to win these prestigious trophies for their club. The pressure is on the Lady Captain who has to make the prediction before the women start their round as to which of her ladies will compete best on that day.
Downes Crediton Golf Club was the venue for the clubs in the East and North of the county. The day started with a bit of drizzle, but ending up with the raising of umbrellas - not to protect against rain but the from the rays of the sun.
Wrangaton Golf Club was the venue for the South and West 5 days later. With no amber warnings from the Met Office, everyone set off in hot conditions with a gentle breeze, but the temperatures continued to soar… but the ladies carried on. Copious amounts of water were drunk and some very red faces were observed on return to the clubhouse but spirits remained high.
As always, a special thanks must go to the Lady Captains, Golf Managers and their professional teams of the Devon clubs where the DevonGolf events are held. These competitions would not run so smoothly without their help in arranging starters, spotters, markers, flower arrangements, catering and checking everything is in place. On these occasions I must thank Shirley Stunnell (Lady Captain) of Downes Crediton Golf Club, Devon Greenslade (manager) and his team bar/ catering and Barry Austin (Professional). Thanks at Wrangaton Golf Club to Wendy Roberts (Vice Captain), Darren and the catering staff and Stuart Barrett (Professional).
Both courses, known for their uniqueness, proved quite a challenge for some with the sun-dried fairways, but praises were heard in the clubhouse on the good condition of the greens.
