DEVONGOLF
With Thurlestone Golf Club basking in the sun, golfers crossed the county to play in the 27 hole Scratch Senior Men's Championship 2022.
It was an early start with a field of 54 players, leaving some disappointed at home having been balloted out with preference given to the lower handicap players. Prizes were split into 8 gross and 2 nett prizes, everyone in the field had something to play for. It was always going to be quality golf with 16 of the Senior Men's team in the mix, all them conscious that Senior Men's Team Manager (and player) Tim Aggett would be making his selection for the South West Seniors' Championship at Bristol & Clifton Golf Club in July - just to keep the pressure up!
It was an 8am start on the tee with just the gentlest of breezes. Play began on the 2nd hole, an uphill par 4 with a wide and inviting fairway. The early starters had the best of it as the breeze from the sea began to pick up more strongly as the day went on. In spite of the more benign early conditions, half the field had returned their card before an excellent 18 hole score from Tim Aggett (Warren) set the bar high. Aggett came in at 72, just 1 over, and kept his place until DevonGolf Chairman Nick James (Teignmouth) matched him. Seniors' squad member Dave Eva (Thurlestone) was in contention with a gross 73. Eva's team mates Mark Evans (RND), Colin Papworth (Teignmouth), Nick Draper (Teignmouth) and Simon Knapman (Churston) were all 1 behind him with gross 74. Also with gross 74 were Colin Masters (Churston), John Mahood (Thurlestone) and Andrew Clark (Honiton), leaving the back 9 wide open with plenty of players in the mix.
After a brief lunch (beer?) sojourn in the clubhouse and following the Senior Women's Championship, players set off on their back 9 holes from the 2nd tee. Again, Tim Aggett set the bar high with a 2 under gross 31 for the 9 holes - a 27 hole score of 103 (1 under) which could not be beaten. Mark Evans played the back 9 to par 33 to finish the 27 holes with a gross 107 (3 over) in 2nd place, as did Peter Bicknell (Torquay) leaving him in 3rd place with a gross 109 (3 over). 7 of the top 8 places were taken by Senior Men's team members, with only Colin Masters from Churston bucking the trend.
