Sunday, 12th September had arrived at the beautiful Teignmouth Golf Club to welcome the four Devon golf club Palairet teams who had successfully plotted their way through the earlier rounds of the Palairet Memorial Trophy draw to eventually reach one of the the most special events for a club of the DevonGolf calendar.
Stover, Great Torrington, Saunton and Staddon Heights were well prepared for the morning's semi-final matches. Stover played Great Torrington and Saunton played Staddon Heights.
In summary, both matches finished 3-2 but with two different routes to this result. Stover took the top 3 games of their match to secure an early result, which was a complete contrast to the second semi-final match between Saunton and Staddon Heights. The live leaderboard scoring was very well received and tension was building due to the chopping and changing of the lead between these two closely contested clubs. Staddon Heights led for most of the match - until the bottom two games flipped their result taking both games on the 18th to secure a Saunton victory.
The final started at 2pm and Stover had already been in the clubhouse for nearly 2 hours whist Saunton had a significantly shorter turn round due to their epic semi final. This led to Saunton getting off to a fast start as they were still warmed up, moving up early in the match and at one point were 4½-½. However, Stover were not giving up without a fight and rallied with the majority of games only having 1 hole in it. Stover eventually found the match result in their favour deep into the back 9 but not for long..... Games 1,2,3 and 5 finished and the result was 2-2, leaving game 4 to battle it out who were all square with 3 to play. The 16th was where Saunton made their move knocking it 10 feet into the hole on the par 3, 16th - making a 2 to lead 1 up. This proved enough for the pairing as they were able to make a par on 17 to win the match 2-1 and completing the match result 3-2 in Saunton's favour to be crowned Palairet Memorial Champions 2021.
