JUNIOR DANIEL'S HOLE IN ONE!

DevonGolf works for golfers of all ages. Every golfer is acutely aware of the ageing golf population and the need to encourage youngsters into the sport. Many traditional clubs are now having to make some changes, perhaps allowing jeans in the clubhouse or opening the doors to "Joe Public" for events and functions. Golf times, they are a changing......

Youngsters have many more opportunities to play sports these days and are positively encouraged to do so. Settling down to become good at one particular sport is another matter. These days the young ones can be good across a range of sports from football or rugby, tennis, cricket, canoeing, skiing..... the list goes on.

DevonGolf works with the Golf Foundation and our County Support Officer to assist with schemes such as Get Into Golf. Clubs are playing a major part in this and DevonGolf is providing coaching for junior boys and girls. A recent South Area Performance Coaching session was held at Torbay Golf Centre for 6 boys aged 9-13 years with a handicap range of 17 to 39. They began with a skills test and then coaching from both Jon Axford, a PGA Coach at Teignmouth Golf Club, and fellow PGA professional Neil Holman from Torbay Golf Centre. But the point of all this practice is to actually go out and play and they ended the coaching session with 9 holes on the Amen Corner Short Game area.

To add to the excitement of the day, Daniel Scofield had a Hole in One on the 44 yard 8th hole. He struck the ball well and with one bounce it spun right and was down the hole!!! Sadly, Daniel was too young to stand a round in the bar for all his compatriots.

They say, "train 'em young." but you've got to, "train 'em right." This 10 year old youngster had a very poor grip and, uncorrected, could have gone on to have a golf swing which he would always be struggling with. It's always a good idea to start with a few lessons to get this fundamental right.

The next training session for young boys is at Teignmouth Golf Club on 18th May from 2-5pm. If you would like to take part and are under 16, please contact Neil Holman on 01803 528728 or 07799 403813. DevonGolf holds training sessions for junior girls and boys so why not give Neil a call?
