JAMES REED DEFENDS THE BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP

On a fine late August morning, 45 Devon boys arrived at Tavistock Golf Club to do battle for the honour to be named DevonGolf Junior Champion 2018. The boys were also playing the last leg of their Order of Merit Competition in each of the Under 14, 16 and 18 age groups. This year saw the juniors playing at 6 venues across the county throughout the season. The best four scores from the six venues, plus the first round of the Boy's Championships counting towards the Order of Merit from each age group (results below ).

After the morning round Jay Scott (1) of Tiverton Golf Club led the field with a 2 under par round of 69, closely followed by reigning champion James Reed (+1) of Exeter Golf and Country Club with a gross 70. This also saw Scott secure the under 18s Order of Merit for 2018. 

The wind picked up in the afternoon at Tavistock but didn't seem to change the fantastic scoring, with 7 of the field of 45 shooting level par 71 or better for the afternoon round. Unfortunately Jay Scott couldn't keep up his form from the morning round with a run of 5 bogeys in a row from which he just couldn't recover, finally carding a 6 over par 77 dropping him down the field. Reed seemed to be cruising towards victory when he hit his ball out of bounds on the 16th hole and carded a double bogey 6. He managed to retain his composure and finished 17 & 18 in par for a round of 1 under par 70 to win the Championship by 1 shot from Craig Passmore (0) of Torquay Golf Club.  Craig Passomore carded a best of the day 3 under par 68 for his afternoon round to finish at 1 under par for the 36 holes. Other notable afternoon scores were Matt Millar (1) of Dainton Park GC 71, Eliot Baker (2) of Fingle Glen GC 70, Lewis Beer (3) of Exeter G&CC 70, David Baldwin (5) from Tiverton GC 69 and Harrison King (0) from Staddon Heights GC 69.
