Tavistock Golf Club crowned Palairet Champions 2018

Sunday 19th August saw four Devon Clubs come together for the 2018 Palairet Memorial Trophy finals day at the magnificent East Devon GC. With the weather set to be fair all-day Tavistock were up against Fingle Glen in semi-final one and first time Palairet finalists Wrangaton were set to go toe to toe with Downes Crediton in semi-final two.

Both teams in each semi-final match were very evenly matched on paper and this was set for two tough battles around a course that took no prisoners.

Alan Gawman and David Turnball off +2 and +1 respectively went all the way to the 19th to take the first point for Tavistock against a resilient James Hamon and Joe Baker. Jack Philpotts and Rob Jarman followed up with the teams second point which led to a final semi final result against Fingle Glen of 4.5 to 0.5 knocking out our Palairet defending champions.

The second semi finalist saw first timers to the finals day Wrangaton go up against Downes Crediton who last made Palairet finals day in 1985 so an exciting opportunity was on the cards for one of these great clubs. Top game Greenslade and Luxton actually claimed the second point for Downes Crediton winning 3&1 against Harper and Neil Ryder as game two caught an on-fire pairing of Cole and Mackay winning 6&5 against Blackler and Tommy Ryder. Merryfield and Newman got the first point on the board for Wrangaton with a convincing 6&4 victory, but this was unfortunately not enough to help Wrangaton as they eventually lost the match 3-2.

The afternoon was set for a fantastic final between Tavistock and Downes Crediton and we were not disappointed as the level of golf played that afternoon was a testament to the players, their clubs and the county as it was a real joy for the spectators. Harris and Ruth in game 3 claimed the first point for Tavistock running away with a 5&4 victory against Long and Arnold, however the next set of points were very much in the balance! The top game of Greenslade and Luxton eventually won down the last against Gawman and Turnball to even up the scores at 1 apiece. The second game looked like the turning point of the final between Philpotts and Jarman and Cole and Mackay as neither pair could break the deadlock as it went down th 19th. Tavistock 4th pairing of Mackenzie and Mier got the second point on the board which left them only needing a point from either of the last two games on the course, one of which was now going down the 20th and the other all square up the 18th. Philpotts and Jarmon motivated by the news that they could seal victory for Tavistock made a solid par on the 20th to the elation of the Tavistock team and supporters as this was enough to be crowned Palairet Memorial 2018 Champions!

Congratulations to Fingle Glen, Wrangaton, Downes Crediton and Tavistock who made the Palairet finals day and contributed to a wonderful day for all!
