SOUTH WEST TEAM WIN v MIDLAND COUNTIES

After the disappointment of the practice round being washed out slightly favouring the home side, the foursomes got underway on a dry but blusterly  Friday morning. After 9 holes the Southwest looked to have the edge, but moving into the back 9,the match overall began to get very close.

The two Toms Sloman and Plumb playing good solid golf closed out their match as did Noah Hessay and Lee James who led for most of their match. The two Wiltshire lads Max and Tom in a very close match had a chance to win at the last but the crucial putt hung on the lip of the cup leaving a halved game, probably a fair result. In the final foursome the Devon pair of Chris and George really dug deep going 3 down early on but gradually worked their way back to all square. After taking a 1 hole lead on the 16th they hit two fantastic shots to par 5 18th leaving an eagle putt which was conceded to give them an excellent win and the Southwest a 3.5 - 1.5  lead into lunch.

With the wind easing and the sun coming through , the afternoon singles got underway with a two tee start. On both sides of the course the Southwest bossed from the start. The standard of play was excellent with Tom Plumb going 5 up at the turn with former British amateur champion Lee James controlling his game 4 up. These boys went on to close out their games backed up by strong performances from the rest of the team, especially the youngsters. Their Counties should be very proud.

To win the singles 7.5 - 2.5 was like a dream but when you saw the effort young Tom Law put in for his half and the quality of Tom Sloman, Will Poole and Tom Plumb, maybe we needn’t have been surprised. Lee James also showed what a class act he still is and it was a pleasure to present him with his Southwest tie alongside the other seven first timers. Final Results was 11/4 to SWCGA.

I would like to thank Phil White and the rest of the team for a wonderful effort played in the finest spirit.
