The foursomes were played in extreme conditions with the forecasted torrential rain making playing exceptionally difficult. The prolonged dry spell meant that the rain lay on the surface of the greens and fairways and quickly filled up many of the bunkers to the extent that at one stage there was a danger that the morning session would be cancelled as the greens were becoming flooded. It was a testament to the skill and goodwill of both Teams that the foursomes matches were completed. Other than the second match, where the Glamorgan pair won comfortably 5&4 all matches went to the 18th. In the top match Devon had been 3 up at the 12th but determined play by the Glamorgan pair reduced the lead going all square on the Par 3 17th after hitting their tee shot to 3 feet. Devon’s tee shot on the last into the trees resulted in a 1 up victory to the visitors. Matches 3 and 4 also went to the visitors by 1 hole where Devon’s approach shots to the 18th missed the green. Devon’s experienced pair of Adam Bridgewater and Dan Rosevear, having at one stage been 3 up, managed to hold on for a 1 hole victory at the last.

In the afternoon singles, despite the forecast of  more heavy rain, it abated allowing the greens to dry out and although the course was still very wet it was much more playable. The top match between Devon’s Jake Burnage and Glamorgan’s Kieran Harman was of high quality with little between the two players and realistically a half was the right result. Devon’s Team Captain, Peter Lawrence also provided a half in his match against Jordan Davies resisting a barrage of birdies from the Glamorgan player in the last 5 or 6 holes. There were comfortable wins for Devon’s Robbie Thompson 5&4 and Dan Rosevear with a whopping 8&6 victory and Adam Bridgewater propped up the tail with a 2 hole win. With  one or two of the more experienced Devon players unavailable gave 2 of the younger and up and coming players an opportunity to play in the first team with young James Reed coming from 3 down to only lose by 1 hole when his opponent holed a 14ft downhill putt for a birdie. There was a similar result for young Bradley Scott.

The overall result was a win to Glamorgan by 10 matches to 5 but with 5 matches in total being lost by 1 hole this result does not reflect the closeness of the match and it is pleasing to report that all matches were played in great spirit and our thanks go to Churston Golf Club for hosting the match.
