DEVONGOLF
The weather and the course conditions at Thurlestone Golf Club for the opening home fixture in defence of the Seniors Channel League Trophy were perfect. The golf that followed by both teams in the morning fourballs was equally good, for example the second match starting birdie, eagle, par, birdie to be four under after four holes and three up. This particular match finished on the final green with Devon winning 1 up demonstrating the fighting qualities of the Somerset team. The other morning matches all finished in favour of Devon with a further two matches finishing on the last green and two finishing on the penultimate green.
At lunch Devon held a 5-0 lead.
The afternoon singles proved to be a little more clear-cut with all the Devon players getting to early leads over the opening holes. As the match progressed these leads increased and it soon became clear that an overall win for Devon would be inevitable but there was nothing at this point to suggested the degree of victory. However as the matches moved into the back nine Devon held a lead in all matches. This continued into the closing holes as matches finished with Devon winning eight of the matches. The two remaining matches both finished on the eighteenth green. Paul Marels, in the first match standing at all square on the seventeenth tee finished birdie eagle to win 2 up while Paddy MacLennan for Somerset won the final hole against Colin Papworth for a half point.
The afternoon score of 9 ½ to ½ in favour of Devon resulted in an overall win for Devon Seniors over Somerset Seniors of 14 ½ to ½.
