DEVONGOLF
On a cool, cloudy and blustery Easter Sunday, Devon started their Channel League campaign at Clyne Golf Club overlooking Swansea. The morning foursomes saw 5 relatively one sided matches. Davids Ashley and Blick found the greens hard going, going down 3&2, but James Smith and Ryan Acres immediately levelled the match with a devastating 5&4 triumph. In match 3, Sam Dunn and Lee Marels (winner of the coaching weekend at Trevose) eased to a 3&2 victory, helped in no small way to an albatross at the par 5 14th. Lee was the first to admit that he could not have holed his relatively easy approach if it wasn’t for Sam’s perfectly positioned tee shot. Debutants Chris Brown and Ollie Tanton from RND found the sloping fairways of Clyne hard to cope with, but in the final match, the ever reliable Adam Bridgewater and Dan Rosevear completed a 3-2 session win.
As rain came in for the start of the afternoon singles, the Glamorgan team came flying out of the blocks. The first 4 matches were lost with the clubhouse far from view, and with all but one of the remaining 6 matches balanced on a knife edge, the match seemed to be slipping away. The tail was going to have to do some serious wagging. Marels brought some respite with another comfortable win, and then the drama started. Dunn won the last for a priceless half point, Tanton stiffed his approach on 18 to win 2up, and Brown also took the last to win 1up. Dan ”That’s the 5th divot I’ve found today” Rosevear sealed a 2&1 win with a chip shot so outrageous that only the Captain could even see it, and only the Vice Captain was left out on the course. He fell 1 down with 1 hole to play after yet another birdie by his opponent, and after a great approach to 18, his 15 foot putt just failed to drop.
So a very honourable result of 7.5 to 7.5, which looked very unlikely halfway through the afternoon. Many thanks to all present for a great team effort against a county we have struggled against over the last few meetings. The next match is at Exeter against Somerset on 11th May.
