DEVON SENIORS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

BACK TO WINNING WAYS FOR DEVON'S COUNTY SENIORS

Still smarting after the humiliation in the South Western Counties Team Championship, Devon's Seniors Team travelled to The Monmouthshire Golf Club for the Channel League fixture against Gwent looking to regain winning momentum and pride.

Gwent at full strength provided a big challenge on a tight, but fairly set-up golf course below the hills of Monmouthshire bordered by the River Usk. Devon responded to the test with an early win by Dave Eva and Graham Ruth in the morning foursomes, this was followed quickly with the pairings of Tim Aggett and Colin Papworth, Tony Allsopp and Simon Waddington adding to the morning points total. The final match, two down with three to play, produced an unlikely but spirited fight back to come down the last hole all square. Out of position to the side of the green, Barrie Keith's chip shot left RND's Kevin Hill an uphill 7ft putt for a vital half point, with both teams looking on; he duly holed out giving Devon just that extra cushion going into lunch at 3.5/1.5.

That added morning half gave Devon that vital piece of inspiration as lead off man Tim Aggett was always in control of his match winning 5 and 3, Tiverton's Allsopp and Waddington followed suit winning both their matches. Graham Ruth also produced maximum points for the day with his 3/2 singles win, but it was Barrie Keith who had the result of the day closing out the only home player, the tenacious Nigel Miles 5/4. Richard Ward had a successful return to the Devon team with a faultless 6/5 win to complete a very satisfying away result for the Devon team who now move back into first position in the Seniors Channel League undefeated after four matches.

Captain Rick Pillow was naturally very proud of the team's performance especially as the away matches in Wales have always proved tough fixtures, to win 11.5 / 3.5 in Wales was simply outstanding. This was a match in which the Devon players were a different class, playing great golf with quality ball-striking and good course management thoroughly deserving their convincing win.

We now look forward to hosting Gloucestershire at Exeter on August 31st. We expect this to be a closely fought match as the opponents have recently qualified for the English Seniors County Finals.
