GREENAWAY TROPHY wrested from Somerset

Devon U18s team defeated Somerset at Downes Crediton GC on 16 August.  They won the foursomes 5:0 and then halved the singles games 5:5 for a convincing total of 10:5.

REPORT

U18 GREENAWAY TROPHY MATCH REPORT between DEVON  and SOMERSET played on

TUESDAY 16^th AUGUST 2016 at DOWNES CREDITON GOLF CLUB.

After the team won last Friday away to Cornwall, they were determined to try and win this match and get back the trophy from last year’s winners.

The hosts certainly got off to a great start winning all 5 of the morning foursomes matches, which meant the team of 10 only had to win 3 of the afternoon singles matches to regain the trophy.   At lunchtime I had to remind the lads not to be complacent and to go out and concentrate on winning their individual matches. Harrison King, out first, won his match against their star player Taylor Stote, only for our next 3 players to lose very tightly fought matches. Our Captain Danny Guy, Craig Passmore and Scott Pym helped our cause by winning their matches, but unfortunately our next 2 players lost, leaving  our last man Jake Dommett needing a win for the team to salvage a 5 all draw in the afternoon matches.

Standing on the 18^th tee all square, Jake eventually won the par 3 hole with a bogey 4 enabling the lads to save face and win the match overall 10 – 5.  It was a warm sunny day and the players from both sides played the game with a friendly, competitive spirit.  I was pleased for the Devon boys as they have worked hard during the last few months, and deserve this success, it is a young side of which I will have 7 out of ten members next year. 

 My thanks go to the Downes Crediton Golf Club for hosting this match, to the Green Staff for the great condition the course was in, to Barry Austin and Devon Greenslade for all their help during the day. Also,the bar staff and particularly the catering staff who rounded off the day by presenting a wonderful hot/cold buffet for all to enjoy.

It was great to see Ian Poole the Somerset Team Manager and  I look forward to meeting up again next year. Finally, I’d like to thankDave Roberts for his continued help and support.
