Devon u14s & u16s teams drew with Cornwall

The county U14s and U16s welcomed Cornwall to Holsworthy on what turned out to be a nice sunny day. U16s report to follow.

The U14s team saw a mixture of high quality and experience mixed with some very young up and coming players making their first appearances.

Morning foursomes started well with James Reed & Luke Tooley always in control of their match running out 3/2 winners. The second match of Craig Passmore & Owin Wong things were a lot closer and just lost out on the last. So all eyes on the third match with the two young newcomers of Jack Dart & Max Parsons, and despite their age they showed great skill and maturity gaining the team a valuable half point, so all level at lunch.

In the afternoon singles the Devon top order big guns came out and flexed their muscles, Craig Passmore, James Reed & Luke Tooley taking control and all winning with 3 holes to spare, but with Owin Wong going down and Max Parsons carrying an injury, it was left to young Jack Dart to fight for something from his match to gain us the win, and fight he did, and was still all square with just 4 holes to play, but just missed out at the end, but had played some very clever golf for one so young.

In the final two matches Luke Lacey played really well to run out 3/1 winner, as did Haydon McCance by the same score.

Final match score

Devon U14s  4 1/2.  Cornwall  4 1/2

The U16s Team

Holsworthy GC also hosted the county U16s who were taking on the Cornish U16s, and the stats showed that this could be a reverse mirror image of the U14s match, and so it proved.

The morning foursomes saw Devon get a great result with a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 lead. After Ben Phillips and Dominic Allen fell to the experienced Leigh and Reynard, Max Nield and Scott Parker hit back with a 3/2 victory, as did our final pair Jay Scott and Lewis Beer 2/1, but just as it looked as though the morning would finish even, as our third pairing of Keir Begley and George Husband were four down with four to play, the boys pulled off one of those great escapes, winning the last four holes and bringing home that 1/2 point that can often make all the difference.

The afternoon singles saw Cornwall dominate in the early games winning the first four leaving Devon well and truly on the back foot. It was left to the lower order to try and save the day. Good strong wins for Max Nield 3/2 and Jay Scott 4/3 gave us a glimmer of hope, but Keir Begley was one down going down the last, and with Lewis Beer getting his nose in front behind him, Keir needed to win the hole to give us a chance of levelling the match, and what a time to birdie the par 5 last for the half which then set up Lewis to close out his match with a birdie of his own on the 17th to gain our draw...felt like a win really!

Match result Devon U16s  6.   Cornwall U16s. 6
