DEVONGOLF
Morning Foursomes – Wiltshire 1 Devon 4
Despite being down in the early stages of nearly every match, the Devon Men began to get the measure of their opponents and played very well enabling us to go into lunch with a very good lead. All the matches were keenly contested, with never more than 1hole dividing the teams throughout the 18 holes played.
Afternoon Singles – Wiltshire 7 Devon 3
Feeling quietly confident of getting the 4 points out of the possible 10 required to win the match, but unfortunately this did not happen. The first 4 matches we lost by the margin of 3/2. We then had a glimmer of hope with Jack Philpotts winning his match 3/1, only for the next matches to be lost 3/1 and 1 down respectively. At this point we were relying on our last 3 players to win but this was not to be as we lost the last match 5/4. This was despite George Robinson & Jack Pope from Exeter G & C C giving us a chance by winning their matches 3/2 and 5/4. At the moment Devon seems like Jekyll and Hyde, good one minute and bad the next.
We were out played times in the afternoon, either by the hosts putting, our decision making or by failing keeping the ball on the fairway. Congratulations to the Wiltshire team on their great fight back, and now know what it is like to surrender such a lead, and end up on the losing side.
Thanks go to the Green Staff for the great condition the course was in and to the Catering and Bar staff at Cumberwell Park for keeping us fed and watered while we were there.
